Last Day of Camp.  THANK YOU everyone who has made this week happen.  It’s been an amazing team effort and alot of fun. St. Paul– Today we finished our plant guides to flowers of St. Paul’s Lake Hill area.  Special guest Greg Fratis Sr. then came to tell us about hunting on St. Paul, emphasizing hunting seabirds and traditional methods and uses. It was mesmerizing to hear him speak about growing up on the island.

photo-38We then split into three groups and rotated between three activities.

1.       Birdwatching at Salt Lagoon with St. Paul Island Tours. We learned about the birds and fish that use Salt Lagoon and how to identify them. This is the only salt lagoon on the Pribilof Islands.

2.       Aleut cooking; we made traditional foods out of murre eggs

3.       Least Auklet diet lab in St. Paul School’s Science Room.  We learned to identify prey types using prepared slides and then took samples from an auklet meal to identify ourselves.

We finished camp with a slideshow of pictures from the week and Aleut treats to eat.  Sad to see the week come to an end.

photo-40St. George–  We met in the Rec Hall for a quick primer on seabird breeding and species identification, then played a murre relay game. We passed a rock (the egg) between partners only using our feet… then raced to a bowl of goldfish to forage. The first team to finish their goldfish won! We then headed over to the harbor, and all signed a contract about not disturbing our Chuchki nest boxes.  The youngest group painted their paper mache murre eggs and then joined us on the beach.  We identified different seabird species.  The highlight was a gyrfalcon that scared all the murres off the cliff.  We then used photos of the cliff colonies to set up and count population plots of murres and kittiwakes.  After beachcombing we headed back to the camp house for a campfire, hotdogs and marshmallows. A great end to camp.
