It’s count-down to Seabird Camp on St. Paul Island, and on Monday, all of our interns started work!

Carley started her field work with an adventure led by Dustin, a USFWS biotech from Kipnuk, a village near Bethel, Alaska. She was able to get resightings on several Black-legged Kittiwakes. Each yellow color band has a two-character alphanumeric code. They can be hard to read based on the angle off the bird’s body. Sometimes we had to wait for a banded bird to move before we could get a proper reading.

Chauncey also showed up to help get ready for camp, filling seabird “stomachs” (balloons) with various “prey items.” We will open these fake stomachs during camp to see what the seabirds have been eating.

Marjorie and her friend Keana had a brief drawing lesson and then got started creating seabird artwork on canvases. The rest of the kids will paint on these canvases during seabird camp and we will l attach them together to make a nice to make a dramatic display.
