Camp Aglakh is an annual summer camp held on the Commander Islands, where students backpack across Bering Island while learning about the rich local biology and history. This year, campers visited Mayatnik and Peresheek bays.
Camp Aglakh 2022 was led by Avdeenko J.V., Belobrova V.V., Oprishko M., and Fomin S.
Natalia Fomina led an excursion and some activities for the students during camp.
Here’s Natalia’s report, and some beautiful photos from Julia Avdeenko:
“The camp has started yesterday. We arrived at Komandor Bay, where I led an excursion for the students. All students were newbies these days. Then we walked to Cape Tolstoy. There was a gale-force wind, although the weather was sunny. Everyone had to be placed in a house. We pitched tents under some cover from wind, and surprisingly they hold the wind. The sea was literally boiling. In the evening I had a lesson on fulmars. I told them about the biological characteristics of these birds, their behavior, explained to the students where they can see them, etc. After lunch and dinner, I also told students about our camp, its history and we all sang songs. In the early morning, I returned to the village. The entire north part of the island was covered with the dense fog, while the southern part, starting from Staraya Gavan; was sunny”.
