The Alaska Marine Science Symposium is taking place in Anchorage, in January 2013. We have funding from the North Pacific Research Board for four students to attend the conference and present a poster and the project videos.
Two students will be chosen from each island based on their answers to the following questions:
(1) What would you share about the Pribilof Ecosystem and community with folk in Anchorage (500 words max) in a blog for the Seabird Youth Network website.
COMPLETE AT LEAST THREE OF THE FOLLOWING:
(1) Seabird researchers use different tools to study birds. Name two different ways that technology is used by researchers (from the SYN blog, sorted by research).
(2) Name two seabird conservation concerns (learnt from the SYN blog, sorted by “conservation”).
(3) Find “Refuge Monitoring” under the Seabird Science tabs (under main Seabird header). What does Breeding Success mean?
(4) Check out the Seabird pictures on the home page. How old are Tufted Puffins when they fledge (leave the colony)?
(5) Check out the pictures of the Black-legged and Red-legged kittiwake. Which of these two species has the more concentrated distribution, with a large proportion of the world population breeding on the Pribilofs?
(6) Put “fishery seabird conflict” in the blog search box. Watch the great movie on the sardine fishery in Mexico (blog 27 Feb).
(a) How many tons of sardines do the seabirds in this area of Mexico eat per day?
(b) What happens to these birds if they don’t have enough food?
(c) What do YOU think should happen to this sardine fishery?
