Our first official day of Seabird Camp! Everyone piled into the truck at noon, and we drove over to Zapani for more least auklet captures. The foxes were patrolling the colony, and we saw one carrying a least auklet. We caught four more birds, bringing our total caught to 11. We’ve become a good catching team, and it’s been fun to work together.
Back at school we reviewed all the seabird species that live on St. George and played seabird bingo. Everyone is an expert on species ID, and can tell the difference between a glaucous-winged gull, a fulmar, a red-legged and a black-legged kittiwake. We then all made a kite, decorated with a flying bird (Bianca drew a dragon…), and tried flying them outside the school.
We spent the evening playing and exploring in the rock-pools down by the old dock.
