The last day of this year’s seabird camp! Our plays and goodbyes will happen tomorrow at 7:30 at the Rec Hall.
We started the day by hearing more about life in the Commander Islands. It is very similar yet different from here. Campers were excited to hear that kids from Russia will visit them in 2017 for Seabird Camp. We wrote pen pal letters to our new friends in Russia to tell them about St. Paul Island.
It was time to flip over our “No Rats” tote bags and seabirds on the other side. Most campers chose to paint their seabirds with life-like color depictions. Some asked for permission to let their artistic license take over. So, we ended up with a few rainbow-colored seabirds.
Campers learned all about using GPS units, including map use and finding their way to waypoints. When the GPS game started, pairs of campers searched for 5 hidden caches. Each had an educational seabird activity at the end. Now these kids will never get lost (as long as they carry a GPS unit and a supply of batteries). As the campers finished, they received materials for making marine life charm bracelets.
Next it was time for our dress rehearsal. Started with “The Outsmarted Hunters” since we hadn’t done tried that one yet. After a couple run-thrus it was clear that we will need some last minute adjustments. Our two takes of “The Foxinator” went pretty well!
We wrapped up down at the Art and Science room and passed out invitations for tomorrow’s plays.
Our evening session featured Aleut cooking in the school kitchen. It was fun to see a group of older boys helping Kuka Zee with her cooking. They got a few murre-egg fritters as a reward for their assistance. Marjorie and Heather stayed late with Kuka, finishing up the food for Saturday’s festivities. We hope a lot of people will come! The weather is working in our favor; it is cold and windy so people will want to be inside.
