FIRST DAY!
Seabird Camp Monday:
Exploring, Learning, and Soaring into Science- June 23.2025

Today at Seabird Camp, our young explorers kicked off their week with an exciting mix of hands-on learning and outdoor discovery!
We started the day in the classroom with camp orientation and seabird introductions led by Alexis. Campers jumped into activities that got everyone thinking like seabird scientists. They made fun tree cookie name tags and even played a seabird ID game.
Campers then split into smaller groups, (Common Murres, Least Auklets, and Red Legged Kittiwake) and rotated through some fun and educational stations.
Our interns helped introduce the kids to binoculars, teaching them how to use them like real wildlife researchers!
Next, we headed out on our walk to the Reef Rookery for a 2-hour outdoor adventure. During the hike, campers rotated through three learning stations led by Brittney, Alexis, and April:
- East Landing Observations – Campers looked for seabirds catching food and recorded what they saw.
- Bird Look-Out (Cliff-nesters) – Everyone pondered what they wondered about seabirds and wrote or drew in their field journals.
- The Blind (Rookery Overlook) – At this seal place, we asked: where do you see seabirds, and why are they there? Campers sketched the reef, made notes, and learned to observe like scientists.
Back in the classroom for the last 30 minutes, Alexis led a session where campers built their foldables to document the day’s learning, and Brittney introduced a fun play to end the day with smiles and laughter, all excited to put on a community event!
A big reminder to all our seabird scientists: come dressed for the outdoors every afternoon!
We’re off to a soaring start this week, can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
