Happy July 4th!
Seabird Youth Network and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge brought a float and face painting booth to the community activities for 4th of July. The float was decorated by campers on the July 3rd to be ready for the big event. It was amazing how many people were in the parade and how many watched. It seems like everyone on the island participated.
The face-painting booth was a big hit. We painted about 40 faces; mostly kids but a few adults as well. Even though they had a variety of faces to choose from, almost every kid wanted to be painted with a fox face. There were a few puffin faces and only one halibut (even though that was the best design!).
Field games went on all afternoon with a brief break for a fried halibut dinner. The most-watched contest was after dinner: the greased pole competition. For hours, contestants took turns climbing and removing grease from the pole. This contest is not for wimps! In the end, a teenager, Ethan Mandregon got to the top and took home the prize.
