On Saturday we enjoyed what may have been our best theater shows yet! Many of the younger kids arrived early and went straight to their spots. In fact, they were ready to go well before the grown-ups! We had about 80-90 people in the audience including family, friends, and even a group of tourists.
Cloe made it clear during auditions that she wanted to be the star of the show. And she was! Playing the title character, “The Little Fox” was onstage start to finish. The story described how foxes arrived on St. Paul Island. discovered all of the island’s wildlife and learned to survive here.
“Trouble in the Arctic” came next, as the older kids played animals about concerned about shifts in the environment on which they depend. The play, in turn, describes how island people feel similarly to the animals and want the same things. He play ended with the Fish and Wildlife Service Biologist turning down the animals’ urging to become the “Governor of the World.” The Tiglax even made an appearance on stage to the delight of many in the audience.
Some improv was required as the shows evolved during the performance. As happens every year, a handful of campers didn’t make it to the show and there was a quick scramble to find other kids to fill in! It was a lesson in quick thinking.
One of our campers, Jaylene, had just finished a Tribal ECO class on A/V. She put her new skills to use filming our plays.
After the shows, guests enjoyed a slide show of camp activities and a variety of refreshments including seal stew. A group of kids interviewed the Director Ram, UFWS Education Specialist Kendra and YCC Member Courtney as part of their A/V training.
Based on all the comments we received, the audience had a great time and were impressed by our theatrical productions.
