Seabird Camp Day 5
Music! Masks! Action! Or is that helmets? It was our last day of camp and was full of wrap-up activities.

We went through the field notebooks we built, starring each bird we saw throughout the week, everything but a crested auklet, and practicing their Unangam Tunuu names (thank you Destiny!). We frosted cupcakes and helped Destiny start the alaadix dough. After fueling up our brains we embarked on a competitive game of seabird jeopardy hosted by Kendra. Our seabird campers flexed their knowledge and missed very few of the questions, resulting in a high scoring game. We put a few finishing touches on our props, collected all of our belongings from the week into personalized bags, and walked up to the Tribal Lounge. We ran through our play, practiced our dance, and hung birds around the space.
Today was also the last day of Leadership Camp and we had all of those participants join us as interns. We put them to work painting props, making alaadix, testing their seabird trivia, and chaperoning the younger kids. All week they have helped make seabird camp a success.

And then it was time. Banners up, festive lights on, cupcakes laid out and freshly fried alaadix piled high. Families and friends arrived, campers shrieked with glee at their photos from the week scrolling by on a screen, and a general buzz of anticipation filled the lounge. Campers donned their helmets, took their places behind their nesting niches, and were all stars. A quick swap for fox masks and they seamlessly transitioned from seabirds into a troupe of dancing foxes. We even did an encore dance with some very brave (and kid-pressured) adults!
“You know summer’s begun when the seabird camp performance is here.” Welcome to summer St. Paul! Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s camp so fun, and to the kids who came out each day to explore the world of seabirds with us. Txin Qaĝaasakuqing!
