By Destiny Kushin and Carley Bourdukofsky
We spent the morning visiting Veronica Padula and Doug Causey in their lab at the University of Alaska (UAA). At the lab, we helped examine bird stomachs. Each student received a stomach sample, washed the contents into a beaker, and sorted organic from inorganic matter to help with their research study. We were very careful to follow the directions as these sample results will be incorporated in their project data. After we finished all the samples, we gathered over pizza, and we chatted about seabirds, science, and becoming a university student.

We returned to the conference in the afternoon to listen to some more great seabird talks, and followed that with a swim at the Captain Cook pool! The evening was spent with family. We fly back to the Pribilofs tomorrow.
We appreciate NPRB for funding our project, Ann Harding for being our mentor scientist, Karin Holser for taking us to the Museum and Imaginarium and helping with our trip, and Veronica Padula and Doug Causey for the lab tour and dissection. We are looking forward to continuing the project and attending another Seabird Science Camp in the summer of 2014.
