Preparations for Seabird Camp 2023 began with visits to field study locations. We learned about Least Auklet diets and Rosy Finch natural history and evolution. Both of these species are being studied by scientists visiting the island and our first field trip during Seabird Camp will be to the fascinating Rosy Finch study site.
After organizing all our materials and arranging the classroom we started our Eggsellent Adventure. We blew out many, many eggs to use in camp. Our intern, Zoe proved very adept at egg preparation. Jenya, from the National Park Service, showed us how to make Pysanky Eggs using traditional wax resist techniques commonly used in Slavik nations.
We continued the Seabird Camp tradition of paper mâché productions by trying new techniques, constructing medium-sized murre eggs and a giant egg pinata.
The 4th of July festivities have already begun and several members of our team took home trophies in the St. Paul Mini-Marathon.
