Beautiful sunshine and energy today. Emma learned about different seabird species that breed on the Pribilofs and started to make a few seabird finger-puppets. I was able to visit a small group of fur seals and sealions that spend their winter on St. George. Watching these animals in the freezing surf and wind is incredible; they are tough. Back at school, Chipper and Jillian had fun playing with words, and came up with two beautiful poems for the Migratory Bird Calendar competition. Two very different subjects: Chipper’s was called a “Red legged Kittiwake tragedy”, see below, and Jillian’s was about the love between two swans.
Red Legged Kittiwake tragedy
Mud and grass, fog and waves
Mom sitting on her egg, looks through the fog
She hears a screech below the cliffs and sees a brown fox looking for food
The fox stops, looks up and sees her
Mom wishes her husband would hurry back from sea
The wind whistling through the air
Squeaky, noisy, flapping, preening
Birds and waves, energy flying back and forth
Dad comes home, sees egg alone and feathers falling in the air
The fox has disappeared
Actions have consequences…
We cooked halibut fish sticks together, and talked about the importance of omega-3 fatty acids for our bodies. The Seabird Fun game came out while we ate. Super fun, especially the miming of the “kittiwake shuffle” cards.
We laughed a lot. Chipper guessed that the mystery bird quiz in the photo below was a “bologna turn”….can you guess what species it is really supposed to be?
